Temples:
31 - Chikurin-Ji (walk)
32 - Zenjibu-ji (walk)
33 - Sekkei-Ji (hitchhike)
We lazed around our business hotel until 10:00 am whereupon we began our walk out of Kochi City to Temple 31. At the beginning we traipsed through the city, across bridges and along canals. We walked around a coastal highway to the entrance of 31 and then up, up, up to the temple grounds where we removed our packs and went up several more flights to the top.
Temple 32 was close, so we walked back down, me with trepidation because of my lack of walking stick (sorry Patty, I'll replace it!) our plan was to stay at a Tsuyado at 33, 34, or 35 and it was getting late so we got a ride to 33 where we booked the Tsuado---a good-sized shed with electricity.
Somewhere along the trail we were handed grape drinks as ossettai..I already had a full bottle, so all of a sudden the weight felt crippling. What's in this pack?
We often eat from convenience stores -- 7-11, Family Mart, Lawson's, or circle k. They have everything: free unsecured wifi, ATM, toiletries, prepared food, and alcohol. The ritual is to scan the aisles for breakfast and dinner. A bag of shredded cabbage and an individual dressing pack is a shared salad. There are sandwiches, sushi, pastries, and full meals that need heating. And of course rice balls and of course snack food and candies.
This night, I selected a mystery meal with rice, seaweed, and katsu and Laura purchased a sandwich. We both got an individual sake. This meal, with sake is always under 1000 yen ($9.00).
Breakfast is yogurt for Laura and onigiri (rice ball) for me. This is usually supplemented by ossettai (gifts to pilgrims) of mandarin oranges, grapefruit, or juice.
As nice as the Tsuyado was, we both slept fitfully. My air mattress is slippery and I get cold.
